Do you wish you had more motivation, focus and willpower?
Do you get frustrated with yourself when you constantly put certain things off?
Do you break promises to yourself that you're going to change for the better?
Does your lack of action result in you missing out on good things?
Don't worry - we are all naturally lazy!
Since prehistoric days, when life was harsh and food was scarce - our brains have been hardwired to influence us away from expending unnecessary effort on things that don't need to be done right now.
It's nature's way of putting on the brakes and making sure we conserve energy to survive harsh times, by hardwiring into our brain:
- Favour the easier option
- Resist effort unless it is clearly worth it
- Avoid change unless absolutely necessary
- Put off til tomorrow, what you can avoid today
You are a 21st Century Caveperson
The modern world we live in today is extremely complex, intense and fast changing - pushing the boundaries of our jungle/cave engineered brain computer system.
Your brain is simply not designed for the information overload and abundance of attractions & distractions that it is exposed to during the typical day of modern life.
Chances are, by the time you have a moment to yourself after a long hard day your brain feels overloaded, overwhelmed and far to exhausted to being doing anything beyond vegging out in front of the telly.
Distraction everywhere
Whilst it's the overwhelming "I really can't be arsed with this" lazy feeling that actually stops us in our tracks, it is usually accompanied by "I'd much rather be doing this" motivational feeling.
"Movies + Popcorn" will always beat "Doing some paperwork", unless there is only 1 more day left to do your paperwork before some unpleasant penalty is put upon you.
When there is always something 'pleasant enough' to do, then your entire core brain programming will always helpfully leap in to save the day, and make sure you focus on the 'worthwhile' short term things and not worry about anything that doesn't affect the here and now.
Fleeting Desires
Every now and then, most of us want something "better" or something "different" - to feel more alive than 'just surviving'. But generally we only think about these things either when we're feeling extra frustrated or there is an external stimulus such as the turn of the year, or a birthday, or someone you know unexpectedly dying.
At these times we gain a sense or urgeny, and think "Right, that's it!!! I'm going to definitely do XYZ from now on! This is the start of the rest of my life!"
But often these things don't end up happening, because our original feelings of frustration/resolution/shock diminish quickly over time. This is why most New Years resolutions splutter to a halt by the end of January.
Motivation is short term in nature
Whilst the reasons in your head about why you want to do something will always exist in your brain circuitry, those reasons are not permanently as strong as those moments in time where you feel resolved to take action.
When your focus is pulled to the distractions of the day, your emotional state moves with it. And with that, you lose sight of the motivation that you originally had, along with the logical underlying reasons.
You don't even realise you've lost sight until some time later when you realise and scold yourself the immortal words "oh shit, I was supposed to be....XYZ"
In today's 'cognitively noisy' world, where your attention is pulled constantly by social media and advertising and high stimulus - those original emotions, thoughts, desires and commitments are drowned out by the here and now.
Why Change Doesn't Happen
The reason why the things that we actually want in our lives are ignored by our brain, is because it simply doesn't care enough about them in the present moment.
If you really want change in your life, you need to be able to work with your short term brain, so that it does the will of your long term brain. Both brains are part of "you", but your long term brain needs help from "you" to resist your short term brain's short sighted agenda.
Your brain is designed to favour short term results
Your brain was designed long before civilisation had fridges and careers and generally cares about efficient survival on a day to day basis. Its basic prehistoric programming tries to steer you towards short term rewards, and avoid even the slightest of negative feelings as much as possible.
Because of this, it will often guide you into things like:
- Focusing on high appeal, but low long term value distractions
- Putting off 'must do' things to the last minute rather than sorting it out and getting done right now
- Not starting on improving things in your life, because next week/month/year always seems like a better time
Your "Modern Human Lifestyle" favours long term results
The way your subconscious brain works is not going to change, but there is a way to influence it and use it's own rules for getting it on side to help you make progress on winning the long term results that you really want.
Do you want to WIN the EASY WAY?
The Bad News!
YOUR BRAIN IS ANIMALISTIC
Your brain evolved in the the jungle, and will always favour short term gains over long term wins.
The central limbic part of your brain is your decision centre, and deals with the short term daily needs of a tree-dwelling tribe member: motivation, relationships and resources for survival.
This present-moment focused, chimp-like part of your brain reacts faster and is stronger-willed than the long-term focused human-thinking part of your brain.
This is one of the reasons why the long term things you want for your human-self, usually don't happen often or effectively.
Your inner chimp-brain is extremely good at persuading you into unhelpful actions/decisions, whilst simultaneously scaring you with fear of pain, loss and worry along with and all the other things that you wish you didn't think, feel or do.
Meanwhile your human-thinking brain isn't very helpful either. Designed for efficiency in collating thoughts and decisions, s it falls apart whenever it lacks cohesion or feels it is not in control. It will literally make things up to fill in the gaps of it's understanding of the world with anything that will fit resulting in you justifying your decision regardless of how much sense it really makes .
The Good News!
YOU CAN TRAIN YOUR CHIMP-LIKE BRAIN
I can show you simple, proven techniques to help you train your chimp-like brain, so that it will support you with your long term human desires & goals, instead of sabotaging your plans with it's usual arsenal of excuses and distractions.
Your Challenge:
MAKE YOUR CHIMP-BRAIN WORK FOR YOU!
This is one of the hardest challenges you will ever face in your life, because your chimp-brain does not care about what you think.
Your chimp-brain...
- will always avoid any work that is avoidable
- makes poor decisions when tired or emotional
- is extremely forgetful
- is never listening when you're talking about your amazing plans for the future
- loves distractions when it's supposed to be doing something unpleasant
- will make you feel uncomfortable or excited in order to get its own way
Luckily, the rules of the chimp-brain are simple, you just need to master your natural aversion to unpleasant / low value activities and your natural attraction to easy wins
Guided by well-focused human thinking, your chimp will help you achieve anything you want at the lowest cost of effort.
